Hey guys!
I think PMU should have a Croagunk’s Swap Shop!
I’ve had this idea before, but after looking through the Suggestions forum I just wanted to put it into a coherent post, seeing as it hasn’t really been done before!
The Swap Shop is a feature in PMD2 (in all three games: Darkness, Time, and Sky) in which, after opening boxes and finding family items (called exclusive items), players trade in exclusive items for a range of different items, for a fee of 150 Poké. There are a couple of different options in the games; here is a quick summary of how it works:
[spoilerTL;DR: Can trade 2 rarity-1 + 1 rarity-2 for that Pokémon"s rarity-3:omoxqakk](I am going to ignore the Silk/Dust/Gem/Globe option for the purpose of simplifying this post)
-
Bring Croagunk both of the rarity-1 items for that species, and Croagunk will give the rarity-2 item back.
e.g. Bulbasaur: Bulba-Claw + Bulba-Fang --> Grass-Guard -
Bring Croagunk all three of the rarity-1 and rarity-2 items for that species, and Croagunk will give the rarity-3 item back.
e.g. Bulbasaur: Bulba-Claw + Bulba-Fang + Grass-Guard --> Leafy Tie -
Bring Croagunk any 5 exclusive items, and Croagunk will return any rarity-3 item of a Pokémon without rarity-1 and rarity-2 items.
e.g. Rattata: has only one exclusive item for it, called the Ratta-Scarf; any 5 items traded in can return a Ratta-scarf.
PMD Sky added the feature that players can trade in 2 items for a rarity-1 item; 3 items for a rarity-2 item; 5 items for a rarity-3 item.

Now, for the analysis of this suggestion:
Points that concern the staff (based on a previous post/my guessing):
-
Concern: Kirk raised the point that trading with Silks/Dusts/Gems/Globes might not be a good idea.
My response: I ignored that in this post. I agree; this can be excluded from the Swap Shop. -
Concern: (my guess) staff would have to code for a lot of new items, along with a lot of new capabilities that the rarity-3 items bring.
My response: I empathize with you on this, and one way to deal with this is to limit the functionality of our PMU Swap Shop is to disable the 5/3/2 item trading, and limit it to the two rarity-1’s for one rarity-2 and the three rarity-1 and rarity-2 for the rarity-3 type trading. This would cut out a LOT of the random rarity-3 items that you would have to script, leaving about 115 items to script (yes, I counted-- just to prove the point that I care, and I understand that this is a lot of work). Furthermore, you could enable the rarity-3 trading only for PMU starter Pokémon (and their evolutions) that have rarity-1, 2, and 3 items. I even went through and copied down the names and Pokémon of these for you:

Concern: SO MUCH SCRIPTING FOR THESE ITEMS awoeihfsdlsdkfja!
My response: Hey, I think a lot of us would be really happy even if these items were just there but unusable (Like Lagging Tailor Covet
)! Many of us are just collectors, and want to finish the collection for our beloved starters! :D -
Concern: Where shall we put this Swap Shop?
My response: Inside the Grassroot Bazaar, of course! (Or another building… maybe a part in the underground, or in the tent in Tanren… etc) -
Concern: The Swap Shop will take too much scripting to make properly!
My response: D: sorry, nothing I can do about that… I just hope you guys can pull it off! We’d really love it! (I’d imagine the scripting would probably be somewhat similar to Xatu’s… except restricting the item found to a certain rarity level, which hopefully is already a defined property of that object [in programming terms], and deleting the traded-in items in the bag instead of the box.)
Seriously, though, we would LOVE you for this. <3 -
Concern: (of the players) WHY oh why this injustice to my starter that doesn’t have exclusive items?
Sorry, I sympathize with you :(
Aaaaanyways, thanks for reading, if you made it all the way through that! As I think you can see, I put a lot of work into this, and really hope it can happen! Please show your support with a comment, or raise another concern, or point out something that I’ve missed or written inaccurately!
June25,2013edit: I hope you can tell from my post that I try to be meticulous, thorough, and accessible/intuitive with my work. I’d be happy to do some of the slave-work for the staff (I’m talking to you, Yatterman), such as writing all the item names and descriptions (including the item functions). You can be sure to trust my professionalism and minimal typos.
