Well I got this idea from a couple of Sudo-MMOs (Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, and Demon’s Souls).
In PMU, currently when you get an item, that’s it. It’s the same as any other item that you’ll find out there. I was thinking that you could have it so that when you get an item, you can upgrade the stat boosts from it to a point at the costs of some sort of material like shards, or maybe on rare occasion an evolution stone.
For instance, item A gives you:
+10 STR
+20 DEF
after one upgrade it could become item A +1:
+11 STR
+22 DEF
Of course you’d only be able to do this to a point. It would also be interesting if some of the equips did more…interesting things once you’ve upgraded them enough. For instance an accessory that halves your HP/PP max, but doubles their regeneration rates, or a weapon with almost no stat boosts that can poison enemies. It’d be especially nice, cause it’d mean that there isn’t any PERFECT character equipment wise. It would probably need equiped items to be safe from loss upon fainting though. Also, it’d require some scripting, though much of the script could be probably copy/pasted from the store script.
Also, I recall a previous thread about a permanent pass to the ferry becoming a buyable item. Considering that it costs money both ways for Archford now, it would make a lot of sense to implement that. Especially considering that there is a housing district there. (Though I’m not entirely sure how housing will work with the PMU 7 system…)
i like the idea but couldnt the item have a name change like instead of sun ribbon when the item is under enough use during the day time it become a solar ribbon(still able to evolve riolus)
Duly noted, I was thinking it’d get maybe a +1-5 on the end of it when you upgrade it, then when you upgrade it again it gets a final form of a different name, or possibly a suffix of some sort added on the end.
IE: An Emerald Band +5 could turn into
Emerald Band of the Strong (has a major strength bonus)
Emerald Band of the Smart (has a major special bonus)
Emerald Band of the Swift (has a major speed bonus)
Emerald Band of the Sturdy (has a major defense bonus)
or a special effect upgrade where the name would change entirely to something like:
Band of the Regenerator
Multiple items would eventually become a “Band of the Regenerator” but only the Emerald Band can be an “Emerald Band of the ____”
Note: I’m not thinking Band of the Regenerator should be an actual item name, cause that would sound sorta silly over the chat. It’s just an example.
First of all, I apologize for necroing something that’s getting close to half a year old, but with the PMU7 update of only having one equip per pokemon, I feel that something like this would be increasingly nice.
There are several items in the PMD games that the eventual final upgrades to items could be inspired from. The band of healing, sticky bands, etc. And just having those as base items seems a bit…boring to me. Not to mention unbalanced. Why would you ever want your belly to last longer if you lose all the stats your diamond cap confers to you, unless you’re entering a very long dungeon that you’re overleved for?
As another side note, stronger equips could have weaker effects to add more thought for the player in the mindset of “do I want the huge regen bonus from my equips, or the defense and attack that may make sure that I’ll never need that, but only get immunity to sticky items?”
Because it’s more of a relevant issue with only one equip per pokemon than it was before, and it was more or less necessary to get people to consider it again.
