Gen 9 family items suggestions!

Hello everyone! i’m here to post a grand project i been working on, making the family items for every single gen9 pokemon! most of them lack names cause this was starting to take too long and i was running out of ideas, so i felt better not to list them instead of just going “pokemon name + scarf/bow/sash”,
but what i did fully spend time on was looking through every single pokemon; thier stats, abilities and movepool and pokedex entries, to get a idea of how well they would perform in pmu and what items they should fit em balance and lore wise, if you have a question to any of the fam items listed feel free to ask i will describe my thought process and reasoning behind giving them such a effect! :vulpixjoy:

I disagree with the fuecoco line and quaxly line family items. Quaxly gets moxie so it would make more sense for it to get the increased attack speed and for fuecoco give it a movement speed for foggy because i would love to see a really good foggy mon that gets 4x speed also give it dark or rock absorb. Ghost absorb is weird considering you gave quaxly and sprigitito both absorbs that the globe does not cover.

you also left out the hisui mons which also don’t have fam items. For the one we have aka kleavor i would recommend attack speed or movement speed in either sand or clear because as it stands scyther is the only one with 4x speed which is kinda awkward for the evos.

PLA technically isn’t a part of gen 9, so its fair to say it was outside the scope of this post. Also, a starter really shouldn’t been given foggy boost considering 1) how bad foggy is, and 2) how consistent the rest of the starters are with their weather.

Gen 7:
Decidueye: Shadow Hold
Incineroar: movement speed
Primarina: Attack Speed

Gen 8:
Rillaboom: Attack Speed
Cinderace: Movement Speed
Inteleon: Shadow Hold

Hate to do this to ya Skelly, but the shadow realm is calling

Gen 9:
Meowscarada: Movement Speed
Skeledirge: Shadow Hold
Quaquaval: Attack Speed

shadow hold can die in a hole in a landfill somewhere

if anyone should have to take the L for gen 9 though make it the cat

Honestly, I just don’t see how attack speed or movement speed even fit skeledirge. It even looks like it has the motivation of a slowbro. Whereas shadow hold actually has thematic relevance to a skeledirge.
The fact that it fits the theme of the last 2 gens and makes it so each type gets to have its turn is just a bonus

i have given quaxly movement speed because i thought it fit better with the dancer motif, altho i can see how you can argue attack speed fits that better,

i gave fuecoco attack speed because movement speed does not fit it in my view due to him being a pretty slow pokemon,
it’s items trigger off of sun because people really dislike foggy, and it is a worse weather then sunny and i did not want it to be far worse then all other starters

it’s immunity is ghost because his whole deal is singing for ghosts,
he’s based on the ghost seranade, to guide ghosts to the afterlife and wish them a good afterlife,
so being weak to them didn’t make much sense

Also feel I should say, on the topic of foggy weather for skeledirge:

Its kinda important that the starters (skeledirge will likely eventually be a full fledged pmu starter) make use of the most widely available and accessible weathers, those being sunny and rain. These weathers have corresponding moves, and so their use can be incorporated early on. The only consistent way to set foggy is with a foggy rock, meaning players picking this starter couldn’t use its weather for a long time.

On the topic of shadow hold - I feel it would be much better if its effect wasn’t a chance to proc. In theory, the effect could be useful, but its just sorta unfair that the already worse effect is random. Other starters don’t have a chance to move twice as fast, or attack more often, they just do.

It was bad then, it’s bad now, it needs to go away for starters. I don’t really care if it makes sense, often times it works to stick with a theme, but exceptions need to be made. A new player who chose that Pokémon as starter shouldn’t find out that its middle family item is worse than the other 2 of that gen. Maybe they’re OP for how “easy” they are to access but that bridge has been crossed. Players have chosen Fennekin and got to spam heat wave, while Rowlet pickers get to be sad that they have to wear trapped scarf or use synthesis every floor but don’t even get increased attack or movement speed for their trouble.

I do not want to see another ghost starter kneecapped by it. Inteleon is somewhat not as bad only by virtue of not being a ghost and automatically having more going for it. Admittedly not the end of the world but it isn’t fair because of what the other starters get.

Ultimately, up to staff but I am begging on my knees that this course of pattern gets abandoned. Honestly I advocate for previous starters with it to get changed not that I really expect that to happen.

If I may add to the Shadow Hold issues… It’s not even that you snipe something and that something stops moving. You need to get hit to maybe trigger the effect. Notice the wording:

“attacking enemies”. We know Umbreon triggers Blinker on getting hit and why that’s so good for him since he can tank a few hits to trigger it.

“attacking enemies”. Decidueye (and by extension Inteleon) are not bulky and yet get a worse effect on getting hit. (Shadow Hold is a renamed Immobilize)

Please don’t give any of the starters Shadow Hold if you’re going to give the other two movement speed and attack speed respectively. Give the third starter also movement speed or attack speed in their corresponding weather.

Honestly, given just how mediocre shadow hold is compared to the golden 2 of family items (movement speed, attack speed), I suggest it receive a wholesale buff.

1). Make the effect guaranteed. (remove the rng, makes it worse for no reason.)

2). Make the effect proc on hit, not on being hit. (This actually makes the effect useful. and fitting with its purpose of sniping, instead of just locking down enemies who are already in your face and attacking you.)

These two changes alone would make this effect much more powerful, and potentially very valuable to have. I still don’t think it would stack up to the raw efficiency of movement or attack speed, but it would at least provide a unique, meaningful boon as opposed to leaving 1 of the starters as objectively worse.

Most of the fam item u suggested I would agree apart from these:

  • Increasing max HP by 10.

These fam items are incredibly buggy, and I would honestly suggested to avoid it.

  • Ceruledge and Armarouge having different fam items category.

They both evolve from charcadet, and a branch evo, it doesn’t make sense for one to get a type immunity and the other doesn’t.

I agree with this a ton. I just don’t think speed boosts fit skeledirge at all, and would prefer to have a fam item for it that at least kind of makes sense.

Would be awesome too to see shadow hold buffed and be on attack instead of on getting attacked, since that would benefit Decidueye and Inteleon, 2 mons that had a lot better argument for getting speed boosting fam items than skeledirge

this is exactly what i mean by themes don’t really matter because sometimes they just get thrown a random fam item like gen 8 fossils or emolga. Even if it fits “in theme” it won’t be used if they are just flat out bad. It doesn’t benefit anyone to give skeledirge bad fam items due to themes.

Hey! Mostly talking about this from a personal opinion perspective rather than a staff perspective.

This is a pretty cool project and it’s clear a good amount of work was put into it. Family items are a bit of an interesting mechanic in PMU. They’re ofc derived from the PMD games, but I’d say because of the multiplayer aspect of PMU, getting all of the family items for a certain Pokemon is certainly much easier than it is in those games.

What kind of gets me with them is there’s a given set of mechanics that range from useless to ridiculously powerful. I don’t think you do anything in this post that egregiously tips the scales more than they already are, but I do wonder if in a certain way, we could do more to personalize family items so that it can make Pokemon feel more special and distinct from one another, or if we can otherwise add in a new customization system to even replace them outright. Either way, I think we can still do them as they exist in tandem with thoughts of how to expand upon the concept later. But there’s certainly a lot to think about!

Getting back to the topic at hand though, I’ve read through these and like the effort put in. Some of these effects look pretty unique and cool, like the Palafin and Tinkaton ones. Some other effects might be a bit too powerful or weak for certain Pokemon, but we’ll take a look ourselves and engage in our own implementations at some point as well. Thanks for the suggestion!

thanks for the response,
looking back on it, i dislike how i given them them the 10+ hp item, which screams “i have no idea what to put on this that would fit” tho,
i definitely tried to stray away from making pokemon too powerful and gave the stronger item to pokemon i felt would be weak in pmu considering thier abilities and movepool, which i assure i very much spend the time to look through all of them :eeveejoy:
