HMs

Well i’m sure everyone doesnt really like to carry around an HM slave (a pokemon that knows all HMs) just to get to a dungeon, so what i was thinking was why not let them be usable as HMs and not moves?

this was possible in PMD games so we know its not an out-of-the-blue question, and i’m sure there isnt really down side it

We originally had it like that before PMU7 when HMs were first released.

There was an issue with it, believe it or not. Players would sell it or give it to their friends without their friends actually getting far enough to recieve and HM of their own.

However, PMU did make it so that you could no longer drop the HM after awhile.

Unfortunately, I can find a downside of your theory. You can carry it in your bag, correct? What would happen to that HM if you were to faint or be defeated in a dungeon. Not to mention since PMU is so advance, I doubt it would go back to using TMs as if they were keys.

Using HM’s more like Item’s instead of just moves would mean you could no long use them as a move, and for HM’s such as Surf, Waterfall, Dive and Fly, that is pretty hard to give up to make room for any other possible moves (I just assume your description of making them into just HM’s instead of moves would mean keep them as usable items, if not please go more in-depth on your suggestion…)

Besides, HM-Slaves are not necessarily that big of a problem (Heck, we currently only have 3 HM’s, one of which is actually a decent move, I have no idea why you would be suggesting this so soon in the game)

To be fair though, when we do get more HM’s in, the staff may consider this as an option, so don’t just think I am telling you “No, this is not happening”, it does not escape the realm of possibility.

Well what i meant was you could use them as items, so say you have HM Cut in your bag if you go up to a tree it would say “Would you like to cut the tree?” even if you didnt have the move learned, you could still teach the move to a pokemon and have the same effect.

The reason i am suggesting this is most people dont really like carrying an HM slave around (kinda why you added a rest stop between mineral cave and southern sea) and in total there would be a minumim of 6 HMs, if you dont count the ones not currently in use in black/white. which would mean we need at least 2 HM slaves or have some of our moves HMs

HMs In Black/White
Cut
Fly
Surf
Strength
Waterfall
Dive
HMs Not in Black/White
Rock Smash
Flash
Whirlpool
Defog
Rock Climb

And asuming that all HMs would be used (since rock smash is in and there are signs of rock climb rocks) that would be 11 moves that would be occupied which is 3 HM slaves or roughly 28% of our moveset as a team together which doesnt seem like much but it is to me.

When yatter said that some of the HMs are good moves i wont say they are bad but when compared with moves that you could learn they are somewhat bad (Ie: Eruption to Cut, Brick Break to Rock Smash, Earthquake to Surf)

And finally to sum it up, yes, if you have them as an item and if you die you would lose them but that could be the set back to using them as items and not moves

The thing is, PMU only has 3 of them (Cut, Rocksmash and Surf), that is what I was saying, we will obviously be getting more in the future, but right we are stuck with those three.

This is most definitively a biased topic:

For one, your move examples as “Good move replacements” are not necessarily good moves to every pokemon in the game, you have to consider the following:

STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus), More damage if your pokemon and the move you are using share the same type.

Cooldown’s (Cool down time between moves used), specific moves (Especially anything that is an AoE, which is usually high) have different Cooldown times, and most of the powerful moves you noted have higher cooldown times then say the decently used HM’s (i.e: Waterfall, Swim, Fly, ect…)

And finally, you need to consider the combonation between specific movesets, as well as pokemon stats. Lets consider water types for a moment, say you were a psychical stat Water pokemon who cannot choose a good move such as Aqua Tail (High in Power, decent acc and PP), your only other option for a good power move with Stab with and that is psychical is Waterfall (Same example for Flying types and Fly, not to mention it is a move which you are nearly untouchable for one turn, and surf for special water types, a decent AoE water move which fills up a good slot on specific pokemon.)

To be honest, this is really one of very few complaints I have heard on the topic, and only other people who really complain about the current HM’s being too much to carry around all day are pretty much the very low minority of players who has passed the current dungeon level progression (Or gotten quite past it).

My suggestion to you is maybe thinking more about the community on such a suggestion, because right about now quite a large majority of the player base has Surf on a water pokemon, and not everyone in the game has as much knowledge on moves and where to get them as any of the people who spent all of the time trying to find said moves.

I am pretty much saying, think about everyone instead of thinking what is best for yourself/the small minority (I say this because taking a look at your move replacement examples, and from what pokemon I know you have, you are mostly thinking of moves that would be good replacements for your pokemon, but you really need to consider STAB bonuses, instead of just going for the move that looks better that is not of your pokemons typing. I am mostly just taking wild assumptions here, but it seems pretty obvious for that is the case.)

It is a decent suggestion, and I supplied my opinion on it. The staff team may look into this in the future when we do happen to get more HM’s, but for now this seems unlikely.
