Having to switch back and forth between chat and the gameboard can spell certain death, especially for newer players not yet used to the system or who are still at lower levels. However, I can’t really think of a way such a system could be implemented, apart from using computers’ onboard microphones. You speak into the mic, and a built-in feature would translate your speech into text onscreen. Of course, even this would require switching channels (so you don’t say something to global that’s meant only for your exploring party, for example).
I’m just trying to start a brainstorming session on how to reduce chat-related deaths (we’ve all been there), and any ideas would be welcome.
We all have had similar experiences with the chat, it has been suggested to add a shortcut to the chat (you press a key and it redirects you to the chat bar without needing to click it). I believe that’s how far we can go. I am not a programmer but I believe converting speech into written words is out of our reach.
I don’t think this issue about the chat is set as a priority but I will remind the team and see if we can implement this sooner. :D
Im like 99% sure im answering in the right direction here.
I’d suggest having a key that switches in and out of chat (a small change of the cursor appearing in the text box before it has been written in could help it be noticed) - perhaps one of the number keypad keys so that it can turned on and off via num lock for those who may not desire it (or like me and press those keys accidentally like all the time)
(personally id prefer a different key - but that requires making all functions customizable to keys and thats a whole different thing. the number pad (through num lock) is right now the closest to optional we can get.)
