Petmonster custom game theory

ok here is the thread, Now on paper in my apartment I am working on something a little different from pokemon.
Scratch that, its different enough that you can’t call it pokemon at all. but it still remains in the pokemon genre of Pet monster trainers.

Now I won’t name this project to avoid some dude stealing the name of my game. but the theories I can share.

Now for my project is going to have a simple but rather well developed lore and story for the players to enjoy.
The system of combat.
first off are the stats
You and your monster have three gauges(one is health, on is EP and the last one is resolve)
EP is the Pp for your moves but its a general pool. moves come in three flavors (1EP,5EP, 10EP)
Now resolve is special it can either act like extra HP or extra EP.

Stats should be similar to pokemon but simply named differently.
I won’t put their names on here until my project is finished.

Now there are levels and at each level you pick what to increase between your health, EP or Resolve.
I know but what about your stats? well you don’t train them by fighting, but by actual training exercises.
each in-game day there’s a limit on how much you can train your monster for.

The only real reason for fighting in this project would be for capturing future members of your team or earning reputation and money from duels.

As for types there are only 7 types so far and im using the fire, wind, metal earth, water whell and the bipolar Light<—>Darkness.

Now as for evolution ALL the monsters have three evolutions, which can be obtained by using 2 items. an evoShard
for going from infant class to juvenile. and an EvoHeart for going from Juvenile to Adult class.

Now there are two other forms of evolution that require an Adult class monster and these are Fusion and Ascension. Fusion is where the trainer fuses with his monster to be able to fight directly and Ascension is for monsters to get a pseudo god form. Ascension is transient much like fusion. so you can only use either of those once per fight. Fusion can only be done with a monster you have deemed your partner and have gone through the trials of fellowship. you can do this trial only once. so the player would have to choose wisely for his fusion form.

ascension is simpler, it requires a powerfull capped out monster of adult class. then you get to the peak of resonance and use The Krystal Krowne on this monster, this however can be reused after the first transformation of that monster, if you want to unlock this potential in another monster you have to go back to the peak again.

Keep in mind I will keep updating this thread as I get more ideas on my own or input from others.

Yeah more or less, I’m coding in smile basic though so I cant do anything fancy unlike C++. I’m allowed only 2 arrays, but its less. I’m doing ok for scripting, but I need more knowledge on dimensions and arrays and a little on data. so far I’m able to generate a title screen a title menu load a scrolling background. I have done animations in the past. and can draw pretty good. I can also compose my own music if I need too. but this thread is mostly on theory. I tend to use open source for my stuff, but I also use programs like notepad++.

Like a good recipe guide for what I should put in take out and tweak to make it viable yet not overpowered.

Essentially my code looks really weird but I can make batch files and exes. just getting exes to work on windows seven and up is a pain. im also curious how to set up my code to read material data like png or jpeg.

I have only two programming books one is one is a 1981 computer university course on basic programming and the other book is the 1995 visual c++ users guide. that’s all I have to teach me aside from gamefaqs.

I have the RISC edition so I dunno if its going to work. but it won’t stop me.

ok erm im going to need a few people to do certain things for me if they want. Im not going to argue about it. it’s simple.
this is what I need in my team;
A coder(well this is the position where you make the parameters of the game)
A scripter(To help making events work)
A graphic artist(for sprites and tiles)
A Graphic designer(for title screen and website, signatures are also a go)
A music technician(if you can do both music and ambience sure)
A writer(I’m obviously going to do that but more help isn’t bad.)

and testers once the game is ready for testing.

Qualities I’m looking for, Team-players, being courteous, eagerness and patience, but the most important quality is resolve. to keep going when there are obstacles in the way to keep getting up when you fall down and courage to finish what you start. that is important. That I don’t know yet. I haven’t really had a chance to talk with the owners of pmu. and the devs. This thread was originally meant to share ideas and theories on a game I worked on paper so far.

If they felt like partnering up with me would be nice if they weren’t already busy. I mean they have already a lot to do and im not coding in C++ or C# so that is a big difference. right now im in the process of making a main folder for the project and folders for the basic things my program is going to need to store where they should be stored.

I’m mostly a self-taught programmer I screw around the registry of my computer from time to time to find and remove things that aren’t supposed to be on it.

But I would like to have some of them help me out in learning how to do modular programming. But that’s just me.

Ok erm more information about the game.

About 10 years ago in my trances I got inspired for a game setting it was really weird but imagine a world where technology advanced so much that manipulation of time and space was the next frontier for gaming. Now your character is a resident of such a world, and he or she(gonna give the players freedom to choose a gender for their character) and yes gender does have an impact on the game I’m trying to work on. doesn’t mean people will hate girls, oh no just a different reaction in their speech. By recieving their ProtoSphere they have acquired the ability to create their own universe based on their own desires. As time goes on you earn money to upgrade your Protosphere this increase the size of your world, eventually with enough upgrades you’ll be able to link yourself to another’s world. but to expand your little plot of land you have to get materials to create special items known as creation modules. where you put them will have no immediate effect other than its there. but once you unlock this area you can have all sorts of special or random events occur there. expanding your house and your lot is important as it brings in variety of both monsters and people.

ok now as you explore your world you discover that indeed you have no recollection of who you were, and because of this amnesia the world cannot let you go back. as it requires you name and password( the players will not have to put the password in this is a plot element. the reason a lot of the gameplay will be like pokemon is because petmonster games are what the main character likes. Me and iSharky will work on that angle. Tomorrow im setting up the npcs in this thread with my version of the background then we’ll see if there isn’t something we can do about making it better.

ok heres is the list of main npcs from the tutorial;
Main character’s mom: a kind and thoughtful Eternian she is the one who purchases your first Protosphere, Although she feels responsible for your lockout, all she can do is send you emails and texts.

Main character’s Father: Distant and quiet Belies a gentle man who loves his family dearly. Once the main character is locked into his world, he begins his own quest to get you out.

Main character’s sibling: What ever gender you did not pick will be the gender of your twin. as a boy your brother is a quiet and shy boy who worries about you and your safety. as a girl your sister cries a lot and wants you to just come back home.

LUKU; Although this character directly comes from my Project Darkshift HE is your personal shop, and trains you not your monsters, and he doesn’t work for free either you need to earn gems called soulspheres to pay for his services, luckily for you soulspheres are common to find as you get them when your monsters win a battle. He is a giant scythe wielding, lantern carrying Grim reaper. and yes he calls you a special nickname. If you are a boy you get one nickname but if you are a girl he gives you a different nickname. He will never call you by your name either, never ever call you by your name even when you will tell him. His appearance in this game is mostly a cameo. He will heal your injuries for free with his lantern. eventually players will access the item mall via Luku.

Mattias Crasse: is the Sphere shop manager, you can buy special Geospheres(which will be added later to include legendaries( only following the theme of the Geosphere) You can also modify and upgrade your protosphere with him, he has a kid again opposite gendered to the main character, who looks up to your character.

Kevyn Neworth: Your child hood rival who has made your life miserable ever since you two met. If your a boy its because he doesn’t like how weak you are. If your a girl its about you having rejected him in middle school. He is the one that sabotages your Protosphere. How and when you won’t know until you get out. a very selfish kind of character.

Officer Veinheld: A yanash police officer of Yanashian descent. Kind and a bit rolly-poly he laughs whenever someone makes mention of his weight class. of course he can’t be too far from his favorite doughnut. HE will also go and investigate on your behalf, to solve the mystery of your lockdown.

Unfortunately , I don’t have any experience for any of these tasks(Im beginning to draw digital art, but spriting is still too hard).

its ok the sprites are pixelated sprites so they aren’t difficult. eventually we can make better looking ones, if you are interested you can just make some practice samples. I’m not going to tear your head. I’m not that great at sprites myself but I’m doing it nonetheless.

Your welcomed to try right now I’m going to make some concept art but I have to record with with my usb playstation eye toy. got no scanner. But that’s the fun part of doing stuff if you keep at it even if you have no talent you can develop skill at it.

I’m an Admin there… and i’m like you, not really experienced for most of the tasks. But you could still look after the forums and such like I do. Not everything is dedicated to the tasks, especially Moderation. You could also Map as well, but we are still working on the Tilesets.

Yeah so what should I need in terms of tile size? 8x8 16x16? Just a quick question.

a little update here, I have tried to make a map and am happy I won’t need to do this anymore. but chopping up graphics is fun and easier to do, I still have to learn how to make a proper module terrain. my problem is making it mmm… look right.

But I have downloaded some graphics since I lost a lot of data that I had made by hand. So I’m using some open sourced programs and data for making my project. my first task how ever is to make a working version of a map editor with the tiles I have scavenged, but I need better building tiles to be honest… I need something much bigger lol

news today im getting more htings organized in the project, tiles are an on/off thing but I’ll make better terrain tiles, im getting a hang of scrolling bgs and illusion of movement, gonna fine-tune some practical gameplay and combat so the question is what you guys want side scrolling action rpg for combat mechanics and an overworld view for non-combat sections like typical rpgs?

Also, I am making a revision of my mascot of DarkLord Luku, not going to be a walking giant skeleton but a normal 16 by 32 sprite character of female gender and yet a mildly helpful nature.gonna be hilarious to make her sprite I kinda know what she is supposed to look like in my head but i’ll post the surprise on my partner Isharky’s website.

lol getting back into rpg maker XP to help me make a demo, now I have to work on the tiles gonna take a long time, but by 3 months I should have something with the pokemon tiles first, then I’m going to swap the tiles for the custom stuff. Have to figure out how to organize a build your own world mechanic. its getting sorta complicated but the main focus is to give a player the ability to change his world as he plays by adding access to certain areas.

Makes me change how I want to code my game project.

Ok now I think I have the gist for making my game rather fun and unique, no pokemon game has ever done that before now I have to finish up on my tilesets and then script away. the idea is so ingenious I have to make a working demo and a video to give people a real taste of the game. ooh im quite pumped for the project. now im using Microsoft paint for making my tiles and im using RPGmaker as a testing engine to test event structures and behaviours.

The RPG maker is a temporary thing at best. I don’t need it but it is convenient.

okay, i know i said i"ve let pmu and such on. but that didn"t mean the forums. i"m mainly staying here for this. as some of you might be aware, i"m an admin on protosphere.
i"ve actually been asking haneko a lot of questions, which have actually yet to be answered, [stuff such as the client, server, and the actual monsters which i guess you can call the “pokemon” of the game.]
haven"t mentioned this to haneko yet, but now is his chance. x3

okay, my main problem is our forums. i"m not all to bothered about the game because haneko is wise and intelligent and so on so there is no need to worrry as i"m sure he has it all in controll.
but yeah, the forums. alright, i"m not always active. i"m just lazy, i guess. but i"ve been kind of thinking that some help could be wanted. i"m not trying to drain all of you guys from pmu though! just wanting some help from people that i am aware of, and who i can rely on.

but to the main point. the forums is a bit of a mess… i guess you can say. it"s not really set out nicely. so, i need some people to help us make it stand out and so on before promoting it. [basically making it world wide]. there wouldn"t be much point promoting the forums if we don"t have much on the forums. xD;

I’m not excellent at spriting, but I am excellent in drawing and creating concepts for animal-like creatures, I would love to draw for this project if you don’t mind.

well that is for spriting but can you make sprites of some of the monsters? and characters…if you want to try go right ahead, right now I’m revising the game mechanics on RPGMaker XP testing out events might be able to pull it off into a demo for kickstarter to see and judge. I’m also looke for a tileset maker(person not software.) to speed things up as my tiles are really really horrible. so bad I’m pretty sure Blazing would cringe at them.

Here are people I need for the jobs I need the most help with.
Graphics(for the title screen, game over and ui stuff)
Sprites(could be for characters or monsters) don’t really care. monsters are more important than the characters
Tiles(yes I know I have been making you wait a long time but I want you to have something nice to work with.) anyone here will be really appreciated.
BGMs(tag them with [PS] and name them for where you want it to be used. we can allways keep the name of the bgm for a soundtrack later.)people here would be welcome.

Now im mostly making code and scripting for the game, I also drum up the story and characters and some of the monsters, blazing ninetails also helps me with that.

Im going to have 3 massive maps1st is the home world map where the intro starts out and where you return at the end of the demo. 2nd is the outside world map and third is the inside world map.

the demo will be for offline only gameplay, and then im going to complete the demo with more modules to play with. the online game is going to be structured differently. story is going to be different and there is one for online mode.
