I’ve had a few people reach out to me about getting the game working on Steam Deck, so I’ve decided to create this guide outlining how I got it working.
I want to give credit to Voicerader for discovering this method.
THE GUIDE
-
Boot your Steam Deck in Desktop mode.
-
Create a folder where you would like PMU to be.
-
Open your preferred web browser (Firefox, Chrome, etc.)
-
Navigate to the official PMU download page. On the dropdown, select Windows Archive (.zip) and download the file.
-
Navigate to your downloads folder and right-click on the PMU download → extract → extract archive to…
-
It will open a navigation menu. Find the PMU folder you made. Select it and then click the extract button.
-
While remaining in Desktop Mode, open Steam. It should be on your desktop. DO NOT click return to gaming mode.
-
Up the top, select games → add a non-steam game to my library → browse button → find your PMU folder, go inside it, and select PMU.exe
-
Go to library → find PMU.exe in your games list → press the cog icon → properties → Go to compatibility → tick ‘force the use of a specific steam play compatibility tool → select Proton 9.0-2 (the numbers after the 9 may change - just make sure you’re on Proton 9.x-x)
-
Now you can return to gaming mode, where you should be able to locate PMU in your non-steam games category of your library.
At this point, PMU is able to launch. However, you’ll have to map some controls if you do not have a bluetooth mouse and keyboard.
Below are my settings but you are welcome to adjust them or make your own from scratch!
CONTROLS
When creating a controller layout, I selected Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse and enabled the back grip buttons (L4, L5, R4, R5)
L1 - Remove command if one is set. This binding is a little different. I will explain at the bottom of this section.
L2 - Enter (pick-up / interact)
L4 - Right Mouse Click
L5 - M (map)
LEFT MENU BUTTON - Home (spin)
R1 - F (attack)
R2 - Shift (toggle run on/off) To make it a toggle: After selecting shift, press the gear icon → settings → toggle
R4 - Left Mouse Click
R5 - Show On-Screen Keyboard
RIGHT MENU BUTTON - Escape (game menu)
I bind my attacks to go off with one button press via adding a sub-command.
A - S, F
B - A, F
X - D, F
Y - W, F
I bind movement to the D-PAD.
My binds for switching pokemon is a bit more complicated:
L1 + X = 1
L1 + Y = 2
L1 + B = 3
L1 + A = 4
A set-up like this requires a minor understanding of Button Chords, or at least how to set them up. Here is a step-by-step for this exact set-up:
- Buttons → “A” → Cog Icon → Add Extra Command
- Locate your new command for “A” → Cog Icon → Change “Regular Press” to “Button Chord” (This should have the words “Button Chord” next to your new “A” command)
- Select the Cog Icon for your Button Chord “A” again → Settings → Set Chord Button to “L1”
- Set the command for your “A” button to be “4” on the keyboard.
Repeat the above steps for the other 3 face buttons.
Ensure L1 has no binding set. If it does, use the Cog Icon to Remove Command, preventing L1 from doing anything on its own.
And that’s it, you’re all set to play Pokemon Mystery Universe on Steam Deck. I hope this was helpful.
Enjoy!
