Story Suggestions and Brainstorming

Hey there! PMU’s a diverse community, and that means ideas are diverse too. Ever had an idea of creating a story or plotline for the characters and places of PMU? Felt like a character or dungeon could be expanded upon? Here’s the place to do just that! PMU is pretty loose when it comes to game story, so maybe here’s a good place to tie it together or start something new. Xeltriskal’s words explain the purpose of this thread fairly well:

“…even if a solid story isn’t entirely possible for PMU, minor stories connecting dungeons is possible. Just leave ideas on what dungeons you think have a story that should either be, A) expanded upon with another dungeon (if so what dungeon would be a good connector and why.), B) What dungeons lack a proper story and could be corrected to add a stronger plot to it. and C) Suggest a entirely different story that takes place in non dungeon map area, such as going into houses and finding some kind of warp/basement that could lead to NPC interactions. (In this case, it would be minor stories. Still can be fleshed out but not as much as a storyline inside a dungeon…just going up and talking to NPC isn’t really what i consider story despite them giving you information on the environment. If you had something along the lines of, completing some mazes inside NPC houses that can lead to some kind of hidden Poke secret would be cool and different. Not everyone is the dungeon exploring type and this can offer a storyline for them to follow.”

No idea’s too crazy, feel free to leave your brainstorms, ideas, or anything you can think of below!

Hmm… this is a hard one for me… I’m sure there are great ideas! :D

I agree with Suzzy.

For example, I had an idea that delves into the meta of PMU: you notice that certain parts of PMU are corrupting, void, or missing graphics (like a permanent lag is in place). This has begun to spread, and you’re fairly concerned about the state of your world, so you head somewhere (I’m thinking a place in Winden) to find the one Pokémon who can help you: an NPC who previously tried to stop the spread of corruption, but failed to do so. As a result, he/she gives up. At first, they don’t want to help you, but if you persist, they reluctantly join you. (A new mechanic shows; they are like a PMD escort mission in that they follow you into dungeons, but they are more than capable of defending themselves.) You either fight the corruption in existing dungeons (if this NPC is with you, a new boss is at the end, Missingno. perhaps, who flees at the end of the fight if you win) or explore new places. As you keep pushing on, the NPC gradually restores their faith and gives it their all at the last dungeon, where you defeat the corruption boss for good.

A thought I had would be following the Zoura you see in Jailbreak.
Spoiler:
Upon getting to the boss room, the Zoura is chased off. Originally it came to check out the corruption of the jail.

Now if I am correct, this is the last we see of the Zoura. What I would love to see happen is encountering the Zoura in Winden. Perhaps in a NEW dungeon though. (Most of the few dungeons Winden contains already have their own stories to tell.) Most likely expecting said dungeon and tells the player about a theory they have.
There’s two possible things staff can choose for the Zoura.

A) You meet them again at the Mid point of the dungeon. Sadly they lack supplies and will have to turn back for now. They wish luck to the player and leave.

B) The player meets them in the Boss chamber again. Either defeated or chased off again. (We can assume that this Zoura is possibly still weak.) They tell the player to not worry about them and kick the boss’ butt.

Next up is Tanren.
Possibly a new dungeon as well or Zoura could be added to a dungeon that lacks a story ending. (I’m a little rusty on Tanren dungeons.)
They are much stronger than before and this time around they are now a Zoroark. They trained hard at a Dojo because they did not want to rely on the player to fight the real battles anymore. They will be able to help you fight the new Boss by acting like a Ally in the fight.
In the end, they thank you for backing them up in the fight and tell you that you can have the treasure.
Zoroark thanks you again and leaves.

Zoroark is here with their own Guild/Exploration team. They are currently checking out the entrance to a new dungeon that just appeared! That’s when They see the player and tell them what they know so far on the dungeon. Of course this causes Zoroark’s teammates to be upset that They just told everything they know to a rival Pokémon. Zoroark apologizes and then tells the player goodbye as They enter into the dungeon.

This time, you won’t see the exploration team inside the dungeon, but Zoroark left you a note! How nice of them :) In the Note it tells the player that they were a little too slow and Their team already cleared the area and took the Treasure?! They write a P.S. that they hope to see the player out exploring again and wishes them luck in the future.

Now in this dungeon, the boss was defeated by the other Pokémon, but The boss wants revenge and takes it out on you. Upon defeating the boss They tell the player to just take the treasure box in the back and to come back again sometime. As they were a good sparing buddy to get rid of some pent up anger.
Now the player just leaves the boss room and picks up the treasure in the loot room.

Maybe sometime later, in a new region, you will find the exploration team in a dungeon. They already beat the boss again and you arrive as soon as they do. Zoroark is happy to see you yet again! They ask how you have been. Course Their teammates tell Zoroark to cut the chitchat as there is a problem. They don’t want to split the loot. So they offer to fight the Player for it. Zoroark agrees completely as this will allow Them to show the player how much stronger They got. They are no longer the weak Zoura that ran away.

Upon defeat, Zoroark tells the Player that They still have a ways to go before They are able to defeat the Player.
They wish the player good luck again and promise to be stronger if they meet again.

The end.

Bonus: Boss Zoroark could have a 1% egg drop for Zoura.

To expand more on this, a small story that could take place would be similar to the HM Dude in R/S/E/ORAS where you use HMs to maneuver through.

Grassroot

Upon entering the house you will get the text, “You get the feeling of being watched…”. In the house, it will be a simple layout like any other pokemon house. But there will be a area that has a sparkle. Similar to finding a hidden item on the ground. (Please note that this will be blocked off to prevent being picked up. It is only there to give a hint of NPC location. NPC will also be stationary.) They challenge you to find them again, but must solve his puzzle first!

In the backroom/basement area, there will be a large maze where HM Cut is required to maneuver through. Maybe a few items will be in deadend spots but the maze should contain a switch to unlock the door. (Not a timed one. A key could work too.) Upon completion you will see the NPC, (who is visible now) sitting at a table. They congratulate you for completing the maze and say that they are moving to Winden and plan to create a tough maze. They hint at needing Rock Smash. They also tell you that the player reminds them of a old friend who use to play with Them. The friend is no longer able to, due to falling Ill. They quickly change the subject by saying they might hire some pokemon to present a small challenge too. They tell the player goodbye and they leave.

Winden

You enter into the HM pokemon house and the text “Someone is watching you…” Pops up.
Finding the pokemon will be similar to the first time. Just a different layout and maybe a longer delay before a Sparkle appears to give the location away. Upon finding the HM pokemon, they present you with the challenge of solving the maze yet again!

Once you enter, you will need to complete a Cut level first. (Entirely different layout.)
Then you are met with a new area, the Rocksmash level. (Note: There will be enemies on the map.)
Same mechanic here, find the key/switch to complete the maze.

Again you meet the HM pokemon, they congratulate you yet again! They proceed to tell the player that the cold does not agree with them, and plan to move to Tanren, where it is warmer. They mention how their friend was taken to Tanren in hopes that the environment there was better for them. Sadly the condition never improved… Hey player…? Next time I expect you to be able to surf. 3rd times a charm. They tell the player that the prize is in the next room over and leave.

Tanren

You find the HM pokemon’s house and met with the text “Someone is here…”. Same mechanic as the other houses. You are challenged again to beat the maze! You then go through the Cut Maze, The Rocksmash Maze and finally meet the Surf Maze!
Surf Points will act like warps to different parts of the maze. You still need to find the key/switch to finish the maze. (Some enemies are here too.)

Upon doing so, the HM Pokémon congratulates you yet again! How do you do it? It’s almost like someone told you the answer… But that’s not possible! HM Pokémon mentions how Their friend always made a map for the mazes because they would get lost at times. But they had a lot of fun. It’s a shame that they aren’t here anymore… They missed them… Oh… Your prize is in the room over. Thanks for coming again. You remind me of them, back to happier days! I’m moving again. I heard of a nice island area that sounds good to relax at. I’d expect you to Climb to great heights when we meet again! Ta tah!

Archford

You finally stumble upon HM Pokémon’s house… “You get the feeling you aren’t alone…”
This time around there will be no hint! The player will have to go around and interact with all the possible areas of the house. (some hidden taunts when interacting with the wrong object can be added.)
Once you find the HM Pokémon they say that it took you long enough! It’s rude to keep someone waiting. They tell you that they know the drill and will wait at the end.

The Maze here will contain Cut level, Rocksmash Level, Surf Level and Rock Climb!
Same mechanics, Key/Switch, Surf and Rocksmash level have enemies, and Rock Climb will have hidden traps!

Finally you complete the Maze!

You see HM Pokémon and they congratulate you yet again! They tell the player that they don’t plan on moving just yet. They kinda like it here. The air is nice, and has a nice ocean view. Their friend really did love to look at it. So it kinda reminds them about the friend. They just wish they could enjoy it with the friend together. HM pokemon thanks you again and says that you mastered the mazes… For now… When I feel like moving ill build a even harder maze! I enjoyed playing with you player and I hope you enjoyed it as well. Maybe you could visit again sometime. They wish the player good luck and goodbye for now.

The Prizes would be a treasure chest. Think of these similar to dungeons but without the multiple floors/large amount of enemies. So each maze would give you a different chest. The ranking of rewards would be as followed:

Until the next region, the story will remain vague ;)

This could be a continuation of the Seaside Cavern dungeon and the Pirate Cove on Exbel’s coast:

You decide to do more exploring in the Pirate’s Cove, and notice that you can actually make out more information than before of the old Kingler’s exploits: seems that he and his crew a long time ago were searching for treasure and loot as usual, only this time, their ship froze over when an unexpected storm blew them into Winden. Normally they would’ve waited it out for it to melt, but a powerful enemy or force made them abandon ship. Taking the Captain’s logs with you, you make your way up to Winden and ask locals about what they know (this is triggered only if you have the logs in your Bag). A few are old enough to remember, or were former crewmates who decided to settle down in Snowbasin (the sleeping Ursaring, the Empoleon Mayor, or Jamie the Walrein would seem likely candidates). They begrudgingly respond, but only because they are trying to discourage you from going to the remains of the ship- whatever drove them out probably is still there. But you’re an explorer, so you insist, and they show you to a new dungeon, Frozen Shipwreck (name hypothetical), a dungeon filled with Water, Dark, and Ghost types.

The first time you go through, it’s a fairly straightforward dungeon: make it to the end and fight the boss, a Malamar with 3 Inkay and 3 Jellicent (hypothetical); presumed to be the enemy or enemies that drove the Kingler and company out. Beat them, and the boss will say something interesting: that their leader won’t be happy to see this. They leave, and there’s a chance that they’ll drop a Mystery Egg for Inkay or Jellicent (again, hypothetical).

Concerned about an even stronger danger looming in the future, you return to Exbel (on urging of the Snowbasin residents who directed you to the dungeon) to meet up with the Kingler at the end of Seaside Cavern again (you don’t have to do the dungeon, the cutscene will begin upon entering SC). You tell the captain your tale, and ask him to tell the truth. Though unhappy to drag up old memories again, the Kingler captain knows you have decided your fate, and tells you about the real boss: a monstrous Gyarados, with fins that blocked out the sung. He gives you the key to a new part of the ship, the hull below. He wishes you luck, since if he and his crew were unable to fight back, what could one exploration party of at most 4 do?

Upon returning to Frozen Shipwreck, the midpoint/rest point of the dungeon has a place to unlock Frozen Shipwreck’s Hull. Maybe it was interactable at first, but unable to do anything significant with, for reasons you shall soon see. (It appears to be a set of doors! But it looks like it needs a key… =(with Captain’s Key)=> It looks like the Captain’s Key fits! Unlock doors and proceed to hull? Yes/No Frozen Shipwreck’s Hull is much like normal Frozen Shipwreck, but a few Dragon-types like Kingra now appear.

You reach the end, and the true boss appears- a Mega Gyarados (this part can be held off on until Megas are implemented). The Mega Gyarados is furious that you’re here- he tells you that he used to be a part of Razed Fields, but grew bored, and sought to test and develop his power to the fullest extent. So he moved to Winden and trained and unlocked the power of Mega Evolution. Now that he’s so powerful, he doesn’t have to share his waters or treasures with anyone. And you’re standing in his way. Defeat him, and he is shown the error of his ways. He promises to stop being such a bully, but requests that you come back often, so that he can still train and get better. After he shows you the exit/treasure room, he considers maybe moving into Snowbasin when he’s not playing the boss of the dungeon in the hopes of making amends with the locals and his underlings (as it turns out, him, the Malamar, and the Malamar’s team from before eventually become NPCs in Snowbasin Town). As a possibility, he has a very, very small chance of dropping Gyaradosite for future battles.

Until the next region, the story will remain vague ;)
Is any of this going to be added in the game, because that would be a very cool idea ;)

Another nondungeon kinda type.

Perhaps in winden there is a small family who lack any money to travel and proper food. (barely enough to get by.) Often the parent pokemon have to go and scavenge for food. The child waits alone at the house awaiting their parents and food.

The player enters the house and the child pokemon mistakes the player for their parents. “Ma! Pap! Your-- Oh… You aren’t my parents…rumble rumble Ah… my stomach… Err…” The child pokemon proceeds to tell the player that their parents left 3 days ago and haven’t return just yet. They tell the player that they headed toward an area in hopes of finding food or loose change.

The Child Pokémon comes up with an idea, they tell the player to wait here and they rush off to find their parents! …But of course the player isn’t going to wait around. The Player decides to head to the area mentioned. Evidence shows that there are old prints and a new pair. (The fresh pair look like the child pokemon’s!?)

You inspect the entrance and take note that this area is not a dungeon but a maze… (HM Pokémon mazes have prepared you for this. /shot.)

The Maze system would be of course icy theme because of Winden being winter themed.
The mechanics would be similar to the ice breaker map.
A huge iced lake that has a path not clearly visible to the player. If you fall off, you fall into a underpass. A little water area where you have to find the exit to get out.
Once you finally maneuvered through this icy hell you need to open the door. (via switch on one of the icy paths. RIP finding it.)

There will be MULTIPLE DIFFERENT maps, getting harder as you go higher. No enemies will spawn during this time.
Some icy paths will have a door that will open with the same switch. (It opens all doors on the map.) But if you enter a incorrect room, it will be a deadend and you will fall through the floor again.

Once all floors have been cleared you will enter the Boss room. Where you see the parents of the child pokemon, and the child pokemon laying in pain. Soon the boss of the Maze appears and threatens the Player. You entered his turf, He is angry that these pokemon were trying to STEAL from him. That doesn’t make him the bad guy! It’s them. Now it appears that the Player is no different since they are a friend of these thieves! The Boss shall bring justice upon the Player.

Upon defeat, the Boss tries to fight again, to protect his treasure and home. But then the Child pokemon’s parents stands up weakly to defend the player and their child. They tell the Boss that they are thieves but are only doing it to survive. They are weak and poor. They can’t get a job and cannot afford a home. But they just want to provide for their kid. The Player is someone they never met but are thankful that they stood up for them. Even if they are bad pokemon… Not by choice though…

The Boss remains quiet at this confession and can tell that these pokemon are being honest. He then offers his turf as a refugee for the pokemon. Until they can get on their own paws/feet. The pokemon family are entirely grateful for this and tear up a bit.

The Boss then tells the player that this misunderstanding has been solved and apologizes for attacking before asking. They tell the player that they could have the treasure box in the back room. The child pokemon wishes the Player look and everyone says goodbye.

NOTE:
The house the child pokemon was in earlier did not belong to their family. It was someone’s winter home and they were not home during the time they live there. The Child Pokémon thinks the player is the owner and leaves in a rush for that reason.
The entire family are wanted by the police, but the reward for them is considerably low. So no one had bothered to turn them in.
The Boss of the dungeon is currently trying to break the family out of the habit of taking without asking.

If the player revisits the Maze again, the Boss will ask if the player wants to spar. If they win they can go to the treasure room in the back. The Pokémon family can also be found in the room a lot healthier and happier. (Course the dad and mom seem to stare at the treasure in the center of the room.)

Inspired by Xeltriskal’s idea (in Skype) about another jail area: “…a remote area. The big time badies are sent here. The entire area would be gloomy, a sort of ‘no life’ vibe in the land.”

Maybe this more heavily guarded prison is the reason for the creation of Pitch-Black Abyss around it: the dungeon is filled with level 100s, darkness, and a difficult, random maze of rooms. Potential escapees from the prison will get lost in PBA so that they can’t escape (if they faint in the dungeon they’ll end back up in their cell). This also explains where the Darkrai of PBA gets their cronies and underlings- some potential escapee makes a deal to serve them, in exchange for freedom. (Though is it really “freedom”?)

Well my idea is a fairly simple one. It involves how to connect the HM dungeons and act as a tutorial to guide you through Grassroot.

You meet up with an exploration team, maybe in an easy dungeon like Tiny Grotto. They’ll pretty much tell you where they plan on going after they clear the dungeon, which acts as a hint as to where the player might want to go next. I’d say that the team itself actually has a lot of experienced members, however the reason why they are going through all these beginner dungeons is because they accept a new member to their team an are training them.
[spoilerexample:c7zio1jp]Team Leader: "Oh hey! Are you a new explorer? Well, we"re actually training a new recruit as well! I have an idea! Since you"re here, why don"t I explain some things to you as well?

New recruit: Do we have to?

Team Leader: Now, don"t be like that!

Team Leader: Tiny Grotto is a fairly easy dungeon, perfect for any new explorer! Of course, the dungeon is actually split into two parts, once you reach the beginning of the second part you have the option to leave… Needless to say the second part might be a bit more difficult than how it was at the beginning of the dungeon.

Team Leader: Poison is also a factor in there as well, so you might want to try stocking up on some Pecha berries or Lum berries. You might find a few in the dungeon, but it"s sometimes better not to rely on luck too much.

Team Leader: Hmm, well… if you find this dungeon to hard for you at the time, there is a dungeon called Pebble cave just to the east of the Crossroads, you might have an easier time training there. Especially if you have really low levels with you like a level one Pokémon!

New Recruit: Um, can we get going? I kind of want to go train some right now…

Team Leader: Right, right… after this we"re going to Sour Root, it"s a bit northeast of Grassroot town, which is just above the Crossroads. That way we can get the HM Cut in order to go through even tougher dungeons!

[/details]

That’s pretty much how I imagine conversations with this team would go, when you meet them at Sour Root they talk about the dungeon some, then they talk about Cliffside Cave, where it is, and how they could get a Tablet for the new recruit so he/she could evolve, and where to in order to do so. They’d also mention that it might be a little tough, so they should stop by the Dojo in town to train some more.

Perhaps after you beat Marowak in the Gold Dojo, they run into you in the boss room, and tell you about Skylift and where it is, and how you can get HM Fly from there and that’s it’s a great place for training even further.

When you head to Skylift they talk about running through Winden Pass and going to Sauna Cavern in order to get rock Smash, and that Sauna is fairly tough so they should make sure to train a good bit before going.

At Sauna they might tell you about Mineral Cavern, where you get Surf, and at MC they might tell you about how SS is a good place to train for certain types.

Then they might tell you about CI when you get through SS, and how it might be a fairly tough dungeon (Since it’s usually for 50/60s I’ve found) maybe tell you to go through Tanren Tunnel and then Tanren Mines to get Rock Climb, and of course tell you about the honey shop and how you can use honeys for training!

Then maybe later on in one of the end game dungeons, the entire team and of course the new recruit are the boss of said dungeon. I think that would be a nice touch. owo

Connect the HM dungeons and act as a tutorial to guide you through Grassroot?

Yes! I love this idea! I’ve seen so many new players lost and don’t know where to go. And I’m not the only one bringing up how we need stronger tutorial/early-game guidance (such as CheckeredZebra’s really long post in “Dungeon ideas and concepts”). This is why I made the thread “Dungeon guidance discussion” but sadly, it died too, and I don’t know where to have my say now…

I think we get a lot of feedback, from player to PMU, inclined towards late-game development. They know where to voice their concerns, while new players, if disappointed, leave. This is why I greatly appreciate this post by Zefa aka Mewtwo, and other story suggestions surrounding the first impression we make upon newly hatched newbies of PMU!

Well, i thought of something to bring relevance to the Abandoned Bunker that seemed “up to par” and thought, why not?, ahem,

Once going near the Abandoned Bunker’s entrance a Golurk NPC would step out, claiming that they’re done attempting to fully explore that dungeon, then they notice the player, and they see that they’re an explorer so they ask the player if they are willing to explore that dungeon for him, but he wants proof that the player can perhaps stand a chance in there so he asks for you to bring him a NEW ITEM which would be found in a dungeon like Deserted Tomb, something like a medalion or the sort, and then they tell you they will be at the Southeastern Village waiting if you are in fact willing to help them, once you bring them that item, they will give you the key to enter the secret part of the Abandoned Bunker, something like a “Crystal Key” wishing you good luck and promising you he would meet you afterwards, the dungeon would contain mostly Rock Ground and Ghost Type pokemon, at the very deepest part, you will find Diancie, who is cheerful and Happy someone entered her domain, after realizing that Golurk sent you here she commands some of her underlings to assist her in fighting you, those Underlings being some Carbink and Klefki afterwards she tells the player that they should come back again to have fun if they are satisfied since they managed to complete the dungeon at least once, after entering the final room, Golurk meets the player again, and he tells the player the story behind all of this, the Abandoned Bunker the entrance to Diancies Castle, after being destroyed by the time and several attackers barging in to steal her treasure a very big mass of the pokemon of that castle left, and Golurk was one of Diancies bodyguards who had promised to stay by Diancie’s side no matter what happened, but after all those years, there were very few Pokemon remaining to help defend the castle, so Diancie created illusions of other pokemon to serve her and for company, Golurk however couldn’t stand the madness and left the place, on Its way out however, it stole the keys locked the door behind so that no one else would interfere with that place ever again, after thanking you for assisting him in clearing that dungeon they leave for Tanren and tells the player that if they want they could go and see them, he might have a reward,

some dungeon notes,
all the Carbink(4) and Klefki (2) in the battle against Diancie have a 8% chance of Dropping Carbink and Klefki Eggs
Since all the pokemon in this dungeon are Diancie’s Illusions none of them are Recruitable
Dungeon would be around 40-50 floors and the NPC’s lvs would be 60+
The “Reward” Golurk has for you once you meet them again in Tanren would be a Golett Egg, however in order for this to not be spammable or an only 1 time thing, you would have to give him a Hidden Item found somewhere on the floor in the final Room of the dungeon
Cofagrigus, Random NPC in the dungeon, would have a 2% Chance of dropping a Yamask Egg

Is this up to par? this was my first time of ever sitting down to actually think of a “story” and it looks kinda similar to “The Story of Winden”

This is more dungeon brainstorming for a sky region proposed by Coki, but I suppose they could be incorporated into existing dungeons as well. I sketched them out IRL, and here’s the page, since the forum cuts off a bit of the text on the right:
[thumb]http://i.imgur.com/KN4KDJu.jpg?1[/thumb]
The one that has the most direct connection to any existing story would have to be Prism Pagoda though, since it features the Ho-oh from Skylift.

honestly I’d be good with just about anything I’d be satisfied with a string of loosely connected events that gives me a goal to work towards and a incentive to do it.

a deeper plot would be appreciated but unnecicary.
