Here’s a few sprites for Venipede that I’m suggesting for use. I’ll edit this with a portrait for the pokemon later:
Did you make the sprite?
Even if you made those or not, I’m afraid that those aren’t the kind of sprites the staff are looking for. I’m not a staff member, but I can clearly tell that these sprites won’t be accepted. Sorry to trample on your hopes.
Yes, I made the sprites, which can also be found on my deviantart account.
With trampling on my hopes? Nah, I wouldn’t really say that… But I may fix things up to the liking of staff. I haven’t done spriting in a while, so I guess it’s gotten a bit rusty on me. If you notice the problems, please tell me.
I’m sorry but that isn’t the quality we are looking for, However, just keep trying, find a Pokemon sprite to base it’s height on (like Caterpie since both are small bugs) and just keep redoing it and redoing it, that’s how you improve.
Ah. Thanks for the advice, Kirk! I was surprised you mentioned caterpie, because I did somewhat use it as a size reference. XD One I get these perfected, I’ll re-post them.
Well if you’d like some detailed advice I can go ahead and give you some -
- The colours are inaccurate. This seems to be a trend about PMD, but I advise taking colours from the actual sprite.
- The walk movement is odd. You’ve made it as if it were a four legged animal, rather than a bug. I’m not sure how Venipede walks, but I know that it has appeared in the anime and Pokepark 2 so you may want to check those.
- Lines and shading are a bit awkward, it looks a bit flat and the lines look very line-tool-ish. Try and make the shading compliment the shape, and the shape accurate.
- Getting onto proportions and stuff that fits in with such things… I can’t explain it too easily, so I’ll just explain some problems I see, okay take the antennae;
You’ve done them sticking straight up, when they’re actually at more of an angle, leaning back toward the body. They should be a bit longer than that and thicker nearer the head. The tail on the other hand isn’t at such a harsh angle as you’ve done for the top left two side sprites. It’s still at an angle, but it’s slightly more straight. It’s also thicker near the bottom, but I think you have it about thick enough, just make it thinner near the top. I don’t think they would move so dramatically as you have on the walk animations too. They should appear to be not very flexible.
Now, another problem I see are the legs. On the side sprite, you’ve got a leg right at the tail, which is inaccurate because that’s not how Venipede’s anatomy works. Its last leg is at the last segment of its body. The legs may have to be only a few pixels themselves, or even just one pixel (they’re under the body anyway), and less emphasis on them in the animations.
The sleeping sprite is a bit awkward, as it presents a weird position that I don’t think should be possible. The thing is, the head is facing toward the screen, but it should be at the same angle as the… shoulder/collar thing, because its head is attatched in a position in which it can’t move it seperately from the body.
The shoulder/collar should actually be larger in the front sprite, but as for size reduction, I’d only make it a few pixels shorter. It’s about as tall as Pidgey (though 4 inches taller), but I think you’ve perhaps made it too long.
Thanks. I’m glad how descriptive you made this, since most people that seem to comment on my work outside of the internet, well… the usual comments I get are very basic.
And thanks to you pointing out the situation with the back legs. I never noticed until now how it was attached. e-e
I guess I should pay more attention to detail.
You’re welcome.
Yeah… attention to detail is the most important thing when making a sprite.
