Hello!
Nice thread you have here, Paka! Choosing your starter is often a difficult task because we believe our success in the game is closely tied to it. It is no surprising secret that the starter pool is very unbalanced in PMU but there isn’t any particular way to make it 100% perfect either. While there is no “best starter” I feel some of them are better than others if you’re playing the game for the first time.
There are some starters which are hard to get along with especially in the beginning such as Abra, Ralts, Togepi, Skitty, Munchlax because of their lack of strong moves at an early level or degrading abilities such as gluttony. While these Pokemon may have very strong final evolutions but I feel that this doesn’t necessarily rank them as the best starter, even if there is a TM Hidden Power in Exbel Woods for such cases. There are other starters which are moderate in providing a early in-game experience such as Meowth, Phanpy, Shinx and etc. And then of course are the most obvious choices for starters. THE REAL STARTERS. Such as Totodile, Mudkip, Charmander and so on. Mostly because of their reputation of being optional starters in trainer games.
According to me the best hypothetical starter has to have features like allowing you to gain quick dungeon victories, has a decent movepool especially at early levels, a nice ability and generally good BST. Looking at it this way, I have no choice but to confess that I feel the best starter is Torchic. Overrated, overused but most importantly overpowered! I personally do not like the Pokemon at all, it is way to common to see one in PMU and has earned a reputation of being an “easy-to-train” Pokemon.
Torchic has satisfactory stats for a pre-evolution, and it’s going to stay a pre-evolution till level 25. (Courtesy of Cliffside Cavern being so hard.) But apart from all that it learns the move Ember. The move has a whopping PP of 40. And an amazing range of 2-tile spray. Moreover its a glide. That’s a really cool move to start out with! Torchic has a decent typing and can also learn flying moves at an early level. Many beginner dungeons such as Sour Root Cavern, Tiny Grotto, Island Garden, Exbel Woods are bug/grass based which means Torchic here has an advantage. But the best part is its ability: SPEED BOOST. While the speed “stat” is a little more than a joke in PMU, this ability actually grants you power to move much more faster than NPCs and allies.
Once it’s level 20+ or so you can easily recruit a Krabby or Buizel (level-based recruit bonus) from the Exbel Coast and get down to owning the Goldem in Cliffiside. And soon you will have your very own fully evolved Blaziken. Having being to equip family items or beginner badge for stat boosts you will be unstoppable. It’s also a pretty decent Pokemon for Tanren Chambers and Harmonic Tower. Even from a team coverage perspective it servers as a more-than-decent offensive sweeper.
[NOTE: I absolutely hate Blaziken despite all the wonderful things written above. Torchic is a beast keeping PMU in mind but I prefer to train Pokemon I like or find a sentimental attachment with. I did however choose it as my starter, but only from of a strategical point of view. Everything written is solely my opinion and all Pokemon are amazing. Yes, even Trubbish.]
